I am a student at Wellesley College, Class of 2013, studying Architecture and Economics. I interned at the American Institute for Roman Culture in June and July of 2011, working on various projects to increase support for the organization. I worked on raising awareness of the importance of AIRC’s activities through social media (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, etc.) by connecting with former participants as well as drawing in new members. I also looked for sponsorship opportunities to help the organization conserve certain sites, like Ostia Antica, and continue to provide free educational videos for the public. I also developed a fundraising campaign to increase the AIRC’s library collection. I had the opportunity to attend lectures, follow class field trips and assist the field school excavation sites, which gave me insight not only into how the AIRC functions, but also into the archaeological field and current conservation issues. As an intern, being able to take initiative and contribute my own ideas in these projects that will greatly impact the AIRC was a rare and exciting opportunity. I met many interesting people, such as professors, curators, and students, who enriched my experience here and helped me feel at home in this unfamiliar city. Apart from working on these projects, I had the time of my life living in Rome, discovering its rich culture and amazing sites.
